Pitching Leads Baseball To Win Over No. 15 Cumberlands
The Lindsey Wilson baseball team secures game one of a 3-game series against No. 15th-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) with a 5-4 victory on Thursday. Solid performances on the mound from Cohen Achen, Glenn Simes, and Cade Duncan helped lift the Blue Raiders over the Patriots in a close battle at Egnew Park.
Duncan relieved LWC in the final inning after two strikeouts to close out the ball game which moved him to second all-time in career saves with nine in school history. He is five saves shy of first which is currently 13. Achen pitched his career-high in strikeouts for a single game with 15 on 25 at-bats and 116 total pitches.
Lindsey Wilson wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first inning as Austin Rayno brought in Michael Sizemore on an RBI double down the right field line. The score marked the eighth RBI for Rayno on 11 hits this season.
Sizemore was able to reach home plate for a second time in the third inning after a RBI double from Chance Stayton who also found himself scoring a run after a SAC fly by Jordan Blick to go up 3-0 on the Patriots. The Blue Raiders were able to score off four RBIs and eight hits in this game.
The Blue Raiders were not as streaky at the plate as they have shown in previous games but were able to capitalize on a Patriot error in the bottom of fourth to tack on to their lead. Thorne Gray made his way around the bases after being walked then eventually scoring on a third base error by the Patriots to give LWC a 4-0 advantage. Shortly afterwards, Gabe Board stole home to go up five runs before the inning was retired.
Cumberlands did not let down as Charlie Muniz got them on the board in the top of the sixth on a lead-off homer. The Patriots struck again in the seventh inning on another homerun to bring the deficit within two heading into the last innings of the ball game. Evan St Claire scored on a wild pitch for Cumberlands in the ninth but Duncan was able to close the show on two straight strikeouts to seal the 5-4 victory.
