Four Grapplers Earn All-Conference Honors; Wrestling Competes At MSC Championships
Four grapplers earned all-conference honors and six placed as the Lindsey Wilson wrestling team competed at the Mid-South Conference Championships in Bowling Green, Ky. on Saturday.
Overall, the Blue Raiders placed fourth out of the total eight teams competing in Ephram White Gymnasium.
Conner Diamond and Adrian Ayala earned All-MSC Second Team honors, finishing in second place in their respective divisions.
Diamond received a bye in the quarterfinals and defeated Shay Horton of Thomas More (Ky.) on a pin at 6:54 in the semifinals, before falling in the first-place match in the 125-pound weight class.
Ayala picked up two wins before falling in the first-place match in the 141-pound weight class. Ayala defeated Kyler Adams of Midway (Ky.) on a 7-4 decision and Bryce Nickel of Cumberlands (Ky.) on a 4-3 decision.
Trent Johnson and Isaiah Reinert earned All-MSC Third Team honors, finishing in third place in their respective divisions.
Johnson went 4-1 on the day in the 149-pound weight class. Johnson defeated Kaleb Clark of Midway (Ky.) on a 6-4 decision and Mitchell Freeman of Rio Grande (Ohio) on a 7-2 decision. After falling in the semifinals, Johnson responded with a pin at 0:31 over Elijah Griffin of Cumberland (Tenn.) and a 5-2 decision over Dayton Marvel of Campbellsville (Ky.) in the third-place match.
Reinert went 3-1 on the day in the 197-pound weight class. Reinert started his day with a win in the quarterfinals, defeating Kadin Stutzman of Cumberland (Tenn.) on a tech fall at 2:04. After falling in the semifinals, Reinert defeated Zach Watson of Thomas More (Ky.) on a pin at 2:45 and Stutzman once again, this time on a pin at 3:24 in the third-place match.
Two other Blue Raiders placed on Saturday as Joseph Koontz placed fourth in the 174-pound weight class and Carlos Figueroa placed fifth in the 285-pound weight class. Koontz picked up two wins, defeating TJ Huber of Cumberlands (Ky.) on a 1-0 decision and Tobias Garrison of Cumberlands (Ky.) on a sudden victory. Figueroa picked up two wins, defeating Ian Daughtery of Thomas More (Ky.) on a pin at 1:55 and Byron Pierce of Midway (Ky.) on a 1-0 decision.
Three other Blue Raiders picked up wins on the day. Corey Cannan earned two wins on a pin and a tech fall in the 174-pound weight class. Will George earned two wins on a major decision and a pin in the 157-pound weight class. Gabe Smith picked up a win on a decision in the 184-pound weight class.
The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team returns to the mat in two weeks as the NAIA Wrestling National Championships are scheduled to take place at Hartman Arena in Wichita, Kan. on March 3-4.
