Wayne County Board of Education continues with facility improvements while also approving new continuing education option for teachers

The Wayne County Board of Education took another step further in improving facilities involving the Wayne County High School Gymnasium and the remodeling of Walker Early Learning Center during their October 20th board of education meeting.

Eric Pelow, representing DECO Architects, Inc, shared a schematic design package for the Walker Early Learning Center remodel project, which was approved by the board. Improvements will be made to the exterior of the building, especially at the front entrance. The interior will be redesigned into neighborhood themes. The designs showed the interior design being divided into biomes which would include: grassland, forest, desert, tundra, and aquatic themed areas. Sensory rooms will be added to the plans. Traffic studies are being taken into account during the planning stages for parking and parent pick up. The board approved the payment of an invoice to DECO Architects at $110,225 for professional services for the project.

The board approved a revised BGI for the high school gymnasium indoor air quality improvement plan. They also approved an invoice to Lynn Imaging for $2,745. For blueprints in relation to the project.

A grounds improvement that is being completed is the track and athletic field grandstand area project. The board approved payment on an invoice for $90,169 for professional services to Conley Gregory Construction.

A new continuing education option for certified staff was approved, along with a one time $1,000 stipend. It offers Kentucky certified educators or administrators the opportunity to earn Rank 1 or Rank 2 change or step increases without enrolling in a college or university and without earning a Master’s degree or new certification. The first cohort will be focused on K-5 teachers, middle and high school special education teachers, and ESL teachers at Wayne County Schools. The district and students will benefit from this instructional program due to the teacher’s growth in efficacy and effectiveness.

A report on the 2021-22 attendance and dropout statistics was approved. Enrollment at the end of the school year was 3136 (+16) pre K-12 with an attendance/participation rate of 91.17 percent, and there were 13 drop outs for the 2021-22 school year.
