Helping Hands Program at WCMS inspires students

Helping Hands Program at WCMS inspires students

Wayne County Middle School has launched a new program through their exploratory classes to help students realize the significance of volunteerism and ways they can eventually make the community a better place to live. Exploratory teachers coordinate and organize the initiatives throughout the year so students can have an impact outside the school building and make a difference.

During the first six weeks, the 8th grade Red Team were responsible for securing a "Helping Hands" program. Their instructors decided on highlighting first responders. Wayne County Middle School Teacher Juliet Perkins’ coordinated the special event.

As a team the 8th grade students made cards of appreciation for all nine agencies which included: Kentucky State Police, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Monticello Police Department, 911 Dispatch, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, Wayne County EMS, Monticello Fire Department, Suzie Fire Department, and Wayne County Rescue Squad.

The first responders were presented with certificates of appreciation and a presentation, as well as breakfast (sausage biscuits, donuts, orange juice, coffee).  The students were glad to see the first responders that were able to come, however, with their busy schedules and taking calls, they were limited on how many were able to take time out of their day. They appreciated those  present which included: Vincent Decker (Rescue Squad), Cristin Hicks (EMS), Gabe Heatherly (Monticello Fire), Todd McFarland (Monticello Fire), Zach Raynes (Monticello Fire), Joshua Smith (Monticello Police Dept), Riley Foster (EMS), Kelly Reagan (Suzie Fire), Jarrod Alley (Dept. of Fish and Wildlife).

Voiceovers within the video presentation were completed by: Carrie Criswell (8th), Felicity Brown (7th), Braylee Hutchinson (7th), Alexis Padgett (7th), Sadie Stinson (7th), Ethan Hancock (8th), Abby Hicks (8th), and Tobie Baker (8th).
