School Tax rate remains steady
The Wayne County Board of Education set the tax rates for the 2022-2023 school year during their board meeting, Thursday, August 18.
The board unanimously approved lowering the personal property rate and keeping the real estate rate the same at 48.5 cents as the previous year. The personal property rate was set at 48.9 cents which was a decrease of .6 of a percent.
The superintendent reported that the school year has gotten off to a good start with very few issues occurring. The attendance was up slightly for the district from the previous school year. The staff’s opening day included the Go Cards awards ceremony honoring staff members who were nominated for the recognition. Lisa Bell was honored as the Most Valuable Player for the certified staff and Lesly Mateo was named the Most Valuable Player for the classified staff. The recognition event is sponsored by Monticello Banking Company.
In other news:
*The board watched the recent KET’s newly launched Kentucky Edition program which highlighted Wayne County Schools’ partnership with the Imagination Library Program. Wayne County was selected for this piece since the community is considered a model for other counties across the state. Walker Early Learning Center Principal Angela Ballinger shared information regarding the local reading success rate, resulting from that special program.
*Approved a partnership with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and Wayne County Fiscal Court for a third school resource officer that will be based at Monticello Elementary.
*Approved construction documents in relation to the Wayne County High School Gymnasium Indoor Air Quality Improvement Project. The board agreed to authorize Codell Construction Company to receive bids for this project.
*Approved to pay two invoices to Conley Gregory Construction for $37,703.07 and $38,117.83 in relations to the Wayne County Track and Soccer Field construction project.
*District Technology Coordinator Valerie Hutchinson shared new data security and breach procedures that are being recommended by the Kentucky Department of Education.
*Agreed to declare miscellaneous classroom supplies as surplus property and donate to Eastern Kentucky Schools affected by recent flooding devastation.
*Approved a variety of consent agenda items.
